If you didn’t make it to the Minnesota State Championship Match Saturday, August 9th, you missed a good shoot, good time and good food.  Did you forget, were you intimidated by the word “Championship” or just had other things to do?  This match just has a fancy name and a reason to give out awards at the annual banquet/meeting.  It was the usual 60 shot match – whatever class you wanted to shoot – some big, some small kill zones - some long, some short distances, etc.  Weather was great and John had worked very hard to have the range all spruced up and the targets all painted real pretty for us to mess up.  Sorry more members didn’t show up to appreciate it. There was a very tense “sudden death” shoot-off between John and Dan for first place.  The target, with a half-inch kill zone, was placed on the practice range at 47 yards and at the time there was a gentle breeze to make things interesting.  Dan shot first – missed, then John fired and missed – with trembling fingers, they each inserted their pellet for the next round.  Again Dan took a nervous first shot and missed.  John shot next and then all of a sudden it was all over except for the congratulating!!  Great match, both of you!

Some contestants just had some silly problems such as someone got so excited about the standing target that they forgot to adjust their clicks from the previous lane and someone else thought they were a turn off, but they really weren’t, then they really were!  Someone else didn’t have sight settings for over 50 yards and his shooting partner suggested that he use his ten-yard setting and happily, down went the target!

The targets worked great!  The turtle was a little temperamental in that only the paddle went down, but at least you could tell it was a hit.  The snake in the cave had flashing eyes that were more disconcerting than were some of the targets with blades of grass waving in the breeze in front of the orange spots.  We thought Barney had retired, but he was back, looking better than ever.

Thank you to all that brought food for the picnic following the match.  It was delicious.  A special thanks to Scott for bringing corn and a cooker and to Jay for bringing soda, even though they were unable to stay for the match.

Thank you, Mark for using your compressor and filling all of our air tanks.  No excuses for not practicing for the next match.

Call John (763-323-9204) if you want to organize a time to meet at the range – remember, no shooting allowed unless there is an Oakdale Member present.
